Über diesen Ort

The MACA, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante, stands beside the Basílica de Santa María in a building of historic importance: the Casa de La Asegurada, a handsome structure of 1685 that is the oldest surviving civil, non-religious, building in the city. Within this venerable shell is displayed one of the finest collections of twentieth-century Spanish art in the country, the core of it donated by the Alicante-born artist Eusebio Sempere. The collection is a roll-call of the greatest names of modern Spanish and international art: there are works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, the sculptor Eduardo Chillida, Julio González and many others, a dazzling survey of the artistic revolutions of the twentieth century. Free to enter, it offers a wonderful and unexpected encounter with modern art in the heart of the old town, and the contrast between the ancient house and the modern works is itself a delight.
