Über diesen Ort
Standing at the river's edge where the old town meets the Arenal gardens, the Teatro Arriaga is Bilbao's grand opera house and one of its most beloved buildings. Opened in 1890, it was designed in an opulent neo-Baroque style clearly inspired by the Palais Garnier, the great opera house of Paris, all columns, sculpture and curves. It is named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, a Bilbao-born musical prodigy of extraordinary gifts, often called the Spanish Mozart, who died in Paris in 1826 just ten days short of his twentieth birthday. The theatre has survived fire and the great flood of 1983, which submerged its lower floors, and after each disaster it was restored to its former glory. Today it hosts opera, dance, theatre and concerts, and its illuminated facade reflected in the river is one of the loveliest night-time sights in Bilbao.
