The Mezquita-Catedral is the supreme monument of Córdoba and one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth. It began in 785 as the Great Mosque of Córdoba, founded by the Umayyad ruler Abd al-Rahman the First, and was enlarged over two centuries into one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world, the spiritual heart of the western caliphate. Its vast prayer hall is a mesmerising forest of over eight hundred columns supporting double tiers of arches striped in red brick and white stone, leading to a breathtakingly ornate prayer niche, the mihrab, glittering with gold mosaic. After the Christian conquest of 1236 the mosque became a cathedral, and in the sixteenth century, controversially, a complete Renaissance cathedral nave was built right into the middle of the arcades. The result is a unique and overwhelming fusion of two faiths and two architectures under one roof, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
