The Cathedral of Girona, dedicated to Saint Mary, crowns the highest point of the old town and is reached by a magnificent and dramatic Baroque staircase of ninety steps rising from the square below. Built over many centuries, from Romanesque beginnings to a soaring Gothic body behind a Baroque facade, it holds a remarkable architectural record: its single Gothic nave, at some twenty-three metres across, is the widest Gothic nave in the world, a breathtaking feat of medieval engineering that was daring to the point of recklessness in its day. Within are a beautiful Romanesque cloister, carved with vivid scenes, and the cathedral's great treasure, the Tapestry of Creation, an extraordinary embroidered hanging from around the eleventh or twelfth century depicting God's creation of the world. The cathedral and its steps are also famous to a global audience as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones.
