The Passeig de la Muralla is one of the great pleasures of a visit to Girona, a walkway running along the top of the city's ancient defensive walls, which rise along the eastern edge of the old town. The origins of these walls go back to Roman times, and they were greatly extended and strengthened in the Carolingian and medieval periods, making Girona a formidable fortress city that withstood numerous sieges over the centuries, most famously the brutal Napoleonic sieges of the early nineteenth century. Restored in the twentieth century, the walls can now be walked for a considerable distance, past old watchtowers and through peaceful gardens such as the Jardins dels Alemanys. The great reward of the walk is the views: from the ramparts and towers you look out over the sea of medieval rooftops, the great cathedral and the broken tower of Sant Feliu, and away across the surrounding countryside to the distant mountains.
