Passeig del Born

Palma's elegant, tree-lined central boulevard, laid out along a former riverbed and once a place of jousting tournaments, now a gracious promenade of plane trees, benches and grand buildings.

Über diesen Ort

The Passeig del Born is the grand central boulevard of Palma, a wide, elegant, tree-lined promenade that slopes gently down toward the sea, long the favourite place for the citizens of Palma to take their evening stroll, the paseo. It follows the course of a former watercourse, a torrent that once flowed here and was diverted and paved over. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the open space was used for public festivals, celebrations and, above all, jousting tournaments, and it is from these that it takes its name, for born means a jousting ground or lists. Shaded by tall plane trees and lined with benches, flower stalls, cafes and grand mansions and shops, it is guarded at its lower end by a pair of stone sphinxes. Elegant and relaxed, the Born remains the social spine of the city, especially lovely in the evening.
