Puente Nuevo

The breathtaking New Bridge, the symbol of Ronda, flung across the sheer El Tajo gorge nearly a hundred metres above the river, linking the old and new halves of the town.

Über diesen Ort

The Puente Nuevo, the New Bridge, is the defining image of Ronda and one of the most spectacular bridges in Spain. Completed in 1793 after some forty years of work, it spans the narrowest and deepest point of the El Tajo gorge, soaring nearly one hundred metres from the foaming river at the bottom to the roadway on top, linking the old Moorish town, La Ciudad, on one side with the newer town, El Mercadillo, on the other. It is a mighty structure of golden stone, its great central arch resting on a pier that plunges to the floor of the chasm. Within the bridge, above the central arch, is a chamber that was used over the years for various purposes, including as a prison, and grimly, it is said, as a place of torture and execution during the Civil War. Gazing down from the bridge into the dizzying gorge, or up at it from the viewpoints, is the quintessential Ronda experience.
