Iglesia de San Vicente

The oldest church in San Sebastián, a robust early-sixteenth-century Gothic building that survived the great fire of 1813, with a fine carved altarpiece and a dramatic modern sculpture outside.

Über diesen Ort

The Iglesia de San Vicente, the Church of Saint Vincent, is the oldest surviving building in San Sebastián, dating from the early sixteenth century. Solid and fortress-like in the Basque Gothic manner, it was one of the very few structures to survive the catastrophic fire of 1813 that consumed the rest of the old town, which makes it a precious link to the city's deeper past. Inside, its soaring Gothic nave shelters a magnificent carved and gilded Renaissance altarpiece, one of the finest in the Basque country. Outside the church stands a powerful modern sculpture, a stark Piety, or Pietà, by the great twentieth-century Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza, creating a striking dialogue between the ancient church and modern Basque art. Quiet and dignified amid the bustle of the pintxo bars, San Vicente is a reminder of the devout old town that once stood here.
