Monte Urgull

The wooded hill rising over the old town, crowned by an old fortress and a towering statue of Christ, with winding paths, historic batteries and the finest panoramic views over the city and bay.

Über diesen Ort

Monte Urgull is the green, wooded hill that rises directly above the old town and the harbour, long the natural fortress that protected and defined San Sebastián. For centuries its summit was crowned by the Castillo de la Mota, a fortress whose cannon and walls guarded the city, and whose batteries played their part in the great siege of 1813. Today the hill is a peaceful public park, its slopes threaded with shady winding paths that climb past old gun emplacements, an English cemetery for soldiers who fell in the nineteenth-century Carlist wars, and quiet viewpoints. At the very top stands a huge statue of the Sagrado Corazón, the Sacred Heart of Christ, arms outstretched, visible from all over the city and watching over it like a guardian. The reward for the climb is the finest panoramic view in San Sebastián, taking in the whole shell of La Concha bay, the old town, the river and the surrounding green hills.
