The Plaza Mayor is the social and civic heart of Segovia, a handsome arcaded square at the top of the old town, overlooked on one side by the magnificent flank of the cathedral. It has been the main gathering place of the city for centuries, used over time for markets, bullfights, festivals and public ceremonies. Today it is ringed by arcaded buildings sheltering cafes and restaurants whose terraces spill across the paving, and it is dominated by two further grand buildings: the Ayuntamiento, the city hall, with its handsome facade, and the Teatro Juan Bravo, a nineteenth-century theatre. A pretty bandstand, or kiosk, stands at the centre of the square. Lively and relaxed, shaded by trees, the Plaza Mayor is the perfect place to pause for a coffee or to sample Segovia's famous culinary speciality, cochinillo asado, roast suckling pig, before exploring the cathedral alongside.
