Über diesen Ort
The Museo del Greco, in the heart of the old Jewish quarter, is devoted to the life and art of El Greco, the Cretan-born painter who made Toledo his home from 1577 until his death in 1614. Although El Greco did not actually live in this precise house, the museum was created in the early twentieth century, around a restored sixteenth-century dwelling and courtyard, to evoke the kind of home and studio in which the artist worked, in the very neighbourhood where he lived. Its rooms are furnished in the style of his day, and it displays a fine collection of his paintings, among them a celebrated View and Plan of Toledo and a powerful series of portraits of Christ and the apostles. Together with the church of Santo Tomé and the cathedral, it completes a kind of El Greco trail through the city that inspired his greatest work, letting visitors step into the atmospheric world of the painter of Toledo.
