Über diesen Ort
The Llotja de la Seda, the Silk Exchange, is one of the finest surviving examples of civil Gothic architecture in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Built between 1482 and 1548, when Valencia was a booming Mediterranean trading power, it was the commercial heart of the city, where merchants bought and sold silk and other goods and where contracts were sealed. Its glory is the Sala de Contractació, the trading hall, where a forest of slender columns spirals upward like palm trees to a high vaulted ceiling, a breathtaking symbol of a prosperous paradise. An inscription running around the walls reminds merchants to trade honestly. The complex also includes a tower that once held debtors as prisoners, and a tranquil orange-tree courtyard, all richly carved with grotesque and sometimes bawdy gargoyles.
