Musee Unterlinden

Set in a thirteenth century Dominican convent, the Unterlinden is the most visited museum in Alsace and the home of Grunewald's shattering Isenheim Altarpiece.

Über diesen Ort

The Musee Unterlinden occupies a former Dominican convent founded around 1230 beneath a grove of linden trees, which gave the place its name, under the lindens. Emptied during the French Revolution, the cloister was rescued in 1849 when a local society turned it into a museum that has grown into the most visited in Alsace. Its greatest treasure is the Isenheim Altarpiece, painted between 1512 and 1516 by Matthias Grunewald with carved figures by Niclaus of Haguenau, a harrowing and radiant masterpiece made for a monastery hospital that cared for the sick. In 2015 the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron doubled the museum by adding a modern wing linked to a former public bathhouse, so that medieval cloister and contemporary gallery now stand side by side.
