Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon

One of the oldest museums in France, founded in 1787 inside the ducal palace. Its old guard room holds the dazzling carved tombs of the dukes of Burgundy, ringed by processions of tiny alabaster mourners.

Über diesen Ort

The Musee des Beaux-Arts de Dijon occupies the eastern wing of the ducal palace and ranks among the oldest public museums in France, founded by the Estates of Burgundy in 1787, two years before the Revolution. Its collections range from Egyptian antiquities to medieval altarpieces and modern painting, but its true treasures are the two late medieval tombs of the dukes of Burgundy displayed in the old guard room. The tomb of Philip the Bold, completed around 1410, was carved by Jean de Marville, Claus Sluter, and Claus de Werve, and beneath the reclining duke runs an arcade filled with around forty individually sculpted alabaster mourners. Entry to the permanent collection is free.
