Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle
A long, shaded promenade of towering plane trees running north from the Comedie, lined with fountains and benches. Once a military parade ground, it is now the favourite place in Montpellier to slow down and stroll.
Über diesen Ort
The Esplanade Charles de Gaulle is a broad, tree lined promenade that forms a green hinge at the centre of Montpellier, linking the bustling Place de la Comedie with the museum quarter to the north. Its towering rows of plane trees, the signature tree of the French midi, knit together overhead into a leafy canopy that shields strollers from the fierce southern sun. The ground beneath was once military land, a bare parade field attached to the nearby citadel where soldiers drilled and marched. A tall Liberty column was raised here in 1791 during the French Revolution and stood for over two decades. Only around 1900 did the army sell the field to the city, which transformed it into the elegant promenade of fountains, statues and ornamental basins seen today. At its northern end lies the leafy Champ de Mars garden and the modern Corum concert hall.
