The Passage Pommeraye is the architectural jewel of nineteenth century Nantes, a glass roofed arcade that links two streets sitting on very different levels. Built by the notary Louis Pommeraye and completed in 1843, it was modeled on the fashionable galleries of Paris and unfolds across three floors joined by a grand staircase. The galleries are decorated with terracotta statues by the sculptor Jean Debay representing Trade, Industry, Science, Agriculture, the Navy, and the Fine Arts, along with pensive stone children. Classified as a historic monument in 1976, the passage has starred in several films by director Jacques Demy and remains a living shopping street beneath its luminous skylight.
