Shakespeare and Company

A legendary English language bookshop on the Left Bank, directly opposite Notre-Dame, where thousands of wandering writers have slept among the shelves since 1951.

Über diesen Ort

Shakespeare and Company is far more than a bookstore. Opened in 1951 by the American George Whitman at 37 rue de la Bûcherie, on the grounds of a former sixteenth century monastery, it sits on the Left Bank with one of the loveliest views of Notre-Dame in all of Paris. Whitman named it in 1964 after Sylvia Beach, whose original Shakespeare and Company had welcomed James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway before closing in 1941. He turned the cramped rooms into a refuge for struggling writers, inviting them to sleep among the books in exchange for reading, helping in the shop, and writing a page about themselves. Today his daughter Sylvia keeps the shop and its generous spirit gloriously alive.
