Über diesen Ort
The Opera de Reims opened in 1873 as the Grand Theatre, designed by the local architect Alphonse Gosset and openly inspired by Charles Garnier's opera house in Paris. German shelling in September 1914 gutted the building, bringing down its dome and chandelier and leaving only the facade standing by the end of the war. Rebuilt in 1931 and 1932, it kept its nineteenth century front but gained a wholly new Art Deco interior, a classic Italian style theatre seating around 748 people. Standing on Place Myron Herrick along the Rue de Vesle, it remains a proud emblem of the city that rose again from the ruins of war.
