Maison Kammerzell

Strasbourg's most lavishly carved medieval merchant house, with three overhanging timber floors dripping in sculpted saints, heroes, and symbols. Its leaded windows sparkle beside the cathedral once night falls.

Über diesen Ort

The Maison Kammerzell is the most ornate old merchant house in Strasbourg, standing on the northern edge of the cathedral square. Its stone ground floor reaches back to the fifteenth century, with the building first recorded in 1427, but the spectacular corbelled timber upper floors were added in 1589 by the wealthy cheese merchant Martin Braun. He had the carpenters cover the facade with carvings inspired by the Bible, music, the zodiac, and classical legend, including the nine male and nine female Worthies and a dazzle of small leaded windows. Turned into a restaurant in 1905 and decorated inside by the Alsatian artist Leo Schnug, it still serves diners today, a showpiece of the city's merchant pride.
