Über diesen Ort
The Hôtel d'Assézat is widely regarded as the most beautiful Renaissance mansion in Toulouse, built from around 1555 for the woad merchant Pierre d'Assézat by Nicolas Bachelier, the leading architect of the Toulouse Renaissance. Its fortune came from pastel, the blue dye pressed from the woad plant that was prized across Europe and made the city's merchants extraordinarily rich. The cour d'honneur is a lesson in classical architecture, stacking the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders one above the other in warm brick and carved stone. Pierre d'Assézat, a committed Protestant, lost much of his fortune in the collapse of the woad trade and the Wars of Religion and was forced to flee the city, but his house outlived every misfortune and since 1995 has housed the Bemberg Foundation and its superb collection of European painting.
