Benediktinermarkt

Klagenfurt's beating culinary heart, a daily farmers market where Carinthian farmers, Italian delicatessens and Slovenian growers gather around a square of low market halls. Cheese, wine, produce and pumpkin seed oil fill the stalls with colour and chatter.

Sobre este lugar

Spread across the Benediktinerplatz, the Benediktinermarkt is where Klagenfurt does its shopping and much of its socialising. The square is framed by four long, low market halls housing tiny cafes, a butcher, a fishmonger and rows of produce stands, while the daily trade spills out into the open on the busiest mornings. The market takes its name from the neighbouring Marienkirche, built in the early seventeenth century and long tended by a Benedictine community, which gave the square and the market their title. Though selling has gone on in Klagenfurt since medieval times, this particular market hall opened only in 1948, quickly becoming the city's food heart. Today it draws more than a hundred vendors from the wider region where the Alps meet the Adriatic, so alongside Carinthian staples you will find Friulian ham, Slovenian wines and Italian cheeses. It is less a tourist attraction than a living piece of the city, best experienced with a coffee in hand and an ear open to the local dialect.
