Haus zur goldenen Gans
A dignified pale house closing off the western end of Alter Platz, crowned by a small gilded goose. It is the oldest documented building in Klagenfurt's old town, its name and shining sign recalling the medieval roots of the city.
Sobre este lugar
Standing at the head of the long cobbled Alter Platz, the Haus zur goldenen Gans is the oldest documented building in Klagenfurt, first appearing in the records in 1489 under the plain name of the house by the castle. It was conceived as lodging fit for an emperor, and Emperor Friedrich III handed it over to the young town before it passed to the powerful barons of Dietrichstein, who kept it as their city residence until 1877. Above the rounded stone portal perches the gilded brass goose that gives the house its name, a seventeenth-century figure that spent years safe inside a museum before returning to its perch in 1892. Its simple facade hides the real treasure within: quiet arcaded Renaissance courtyards that in 1975 became the very first in the old town to be cleared, restored and opened to the public, a hushed green pocket just steps from the busy square.
