Humboldtstraße 31, Hitler's Boyhood Home

An unmarked residential block where the teenage Adolf Hitler lived with his widowed mother from 1905 to 1907. Behind the third floor windows, an idle school dropout sketched fantasy plans to rebuild Linz.

Sobre este lugar

In June 1905 Klara Hitler sold the family house in Leonding and rented a third floor flat in this then recently built tenement on Humboldtstraße, moving in with her son Adolf, daughter Paula and her sister Johanna Pölzl. The two years the family spent here were the drifting years of Hitler's adolescence: he had left the Realschule without a certificate, refused to take a job or an apprenticeship, and lived on his mother's pension while drawing, painting, reading and going to the Landestheater almost every evening. It was there, in November 1905, that he met August Kubizek, the only friend of his youth, who later described the small room in this building crowded with sketches for a new bridge, an opera house and a wholly rebuilt Linz. The family left in May 1907 after Klara was diagnosed with breast cancer and could no longer climb the stairs. The building is a private home today and carries no plaque; the city has chosen not to mark it, and visitors are asked to view it only from the street.
