The Makartsteg - Crossing the Salzach

A slender glass and steel footbridge over the rushing green Salzach, its railings buried under thousands of lovers' padlocks. From the middle you get the classic Salzburg postcard of river, old town and fortress that the film made world famous.

Sobre este lugar

The Makartsteg is the pedestrian bridge that stitches the two halves of Salzburg together, carrying you from the Mirabell side across the fast green Salzach into the heart of the old town. Its railings are encrusted with thousands of love locks, and from the middle of the span you get the quintessential Salzburg view, the river rushing below and the Hohensalzburg fortress crowning the skyline, the very panorama that glows behind Maria and the children in the Do Re Mi montage. Named originally for the Salzburg born painter Hans Makart, the bridge was later renamed the Marko Feingold Steg in honour of a Holocaust survivor who led the city's Jewish community for decades, a quiet reminder that the real Salzburg carries the darker history the film only hints at. For us it is both a breathtaking viewpoint and the threshold between the film set Salzburg of the gardens and the authentic old town locations waiting on the far bank.
