The Butterfly-Knife at the Bridgehead - Griesgasse
At the old-town foot of the Makartsteg, on Griesgasse, a drunken quarrel in the early hours of 28 December 2019 ended with a butterfly knife and two young men bleeding on the pavement - a double stabbing that brought fifteen- and ten-year sentences for attempted murder.
Sobre este lugar
The Makartsteg, the glass-and-steel footbridge hung with lovers' padlocks, carries you from the right bank into the heart of the old town, landing on Griesgasse beneath the Monchsberg. By day it is one of Salzburg's prettiest crossings; in the small hours of 28 December 2019 the lane at its foot became a crime scene. Outside a bar on Griesgasse a drunken dispute flared between two groups of young men, and a 26-year-old Austrian pulled out a butterfly knife and stabbed two men from the Flachgau - one in the abdomen, one in the back. Both were seriously wounded but survived. A 24-year-old Syrian was accused of having handed over the weapon. On 11 July 2020 a jury at the Landesgericht Salzburg convicted both men of attempted murder, sentencing the Austrian to fifteen years and the Syrian to ten, one of the heaviest verdicts handed down for a Salzburg nightlife brawl in recent memory.
