Sobre este lugar
The Burgtheater is the proudest stage of the German-speaking world, yet in 1925 it became a crime scene. Todor Panitsa, a leader of IMRO's left wing living in Vienna under the alias Dimitri Arnautovic, had been condemned to death by the organization's nationalist leadership after backing a manifesto that split the movement. The sentence was carried out by 22-year-old Mencha Karnicheva, who had spent months winning the trust of Panitsa's family — even lodging with his sister-in-law — until they invited her to share their box for Peer Gynt. She timed her six revolver shots to the thundering storm scene of the final act. Her Vienna trial became a public sensation: portrayed as a patriotic avenger, she was sentenced to a mere eight years, released within months over claims of tuberculosis, and deported. She later married IMRO's supreme leader Ivan Mihailov — the man whose organization had ordered the killing.
