Basler Münster

Basel's iconic red-sandstone cathedral crowns the old town with two slender towers and a glittering roof of coloured tiles. Behind it, the Pfalz terrace opens onto one of the finest views over the Rhine in all of Switzerland.

Sobre este lugar

Rising above the old town in warm red sandstone, the Basler Münster is the unmistakable landmark of Basel, blending Romanesque foundations with soaring Gothic ambition. Built and rebuilt between 1019 and 1500, it was shattered by the catastrophic earthquake of 1356 and reconstructed with two towers rather than its original five. Since the Reformation of 1529 it has served as the principal church of the Swiss Reformed community, its interior stripped of imagery yet still holding the tomb of the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam. Around the back, the Pfalz terrace, once a Roman vineyard, offers a sweeping panorama over the river to the distant Black Forest.
