Kramgasse & Zähringer Fountain

The grand arcaded main street of Bern's old town, lined with painted Renaissance fountains and Baroque façades. At its western end stands the Zähringerbrunnen, crowned by an armoured bear that guards the memory of the city's founding.

Sobre este lugar

Kramgasse forms the western half of the central axis of the Zähringerstadt, the oldest core of Bern laid out shortly after the city was founded in 1191. Running some 330 metres from the foot of the Zytglogge, it was the marketplace and beating heart of civic life until the nineteenth century. On both sides, continuous sandstone arcades known as Lauben shelter shops and cafés beneath rounded arches, part of a covered network that stretches for roughly six kilometres through the old town. Between 1705 and 1745, the majority of the street's houses were remodelled with elegant Baroque façades, and three ornate fountains punctuate its length. The most famous is the Zähringerbrunnen at the western end, built in 1535, whose armoured bear immortalises the legend of Bern's founder. Together the street, its fountains, and its arcades form a centrepiece of the UNESCO World Heritage old city.
