Sobre este lugar
Weinmarkt is the beating heart of Lucerne's Altstadt, an intimate square where painted facades lean over cobblestones and a slender fountain marks the exact spot history was made. Its name recalls the wine trade, though for centuries it also served as a fish market and a gathering place for the guilds of butchers, tanners, shoemakers and innkeepers whose taverns doubled as guildhalls. In 1332 the townspeople assembled here to swear their allegiance to the young Swiss Confederation, and from the mid-fifteenth century the square was transformed into a vast open-air theatre for the famous Lucerne passion plays. Today its colourful murals, wrought-iron shop signs and cafe terraces make it one of the prettiest corners in a town already famous for its beauty.
