Lindenhof

A leafy hilltop terrace offering one of Zurich's finest views across the Limmat to the Old Town's rooftops and church towers. This quiet, tree-shaded square is also the very birthplace of the city.

Sobre este lugar

Raised about twenty five meters above the Limmat river, the Lindenhof is a moraine hill that has been the beating heart of Zurich for two thousand years. Beneath its gravel and linden shade lie the ruins of a Roman citadel and, later, a Carolingian imperial palace, layers of history that make this the oldest inhabited ground in the city. Today no fortress remains. Instead the hill has become a serene public terrace where locals bend over oversized chessboards, play boccia in the dappled light, and gaze out over the medieval rooftops toward the twin towers of the Grossmunster. It is both a spectacular viewpoint and a monument to Zurich's proudest legend, when the women of the city are said to have saved it from a Habsburg siege in 1292.
