Old Garden Square (Alter Garten)

Schwerin's grand ceremonial square, framed by castle, museum and theatre, is often called one of the most beautiful neoclassical squares in northern Germany. At its heart rides a bronze grand duke, and its cobbles once held tens of thousands of candle-carrying demonstrators.

Sobre este lugar

The Alter Garten, or Old Garden, is the monumental open heart of Schwerin's royal quarter, a broad square that opens toward the lake and the castle island. Once a private pleasure garden of the dukes, it was reshaped in the nineteenth century into a stately public forum ringed by cultural palaces: the State Museum on one side, the ornate court theatre on the other, and the fairy-tale castle closing the view. In its centre stands the towering equestrian statue of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. For a place built to glorify royalty, its most powerful modern memory is democratic, for on this very ground in the autumn of 1989 tens of thousands of citizens gathered peacefully to demand freedom, helping to bring down a dictatorship. Today the square anchors the Residence Ensemble that UNESCO added to its World Heritage list in 2024.
