Old Town Lanes (Buschstraße)

A tangle of crooked cobbled lanes just south of the Market Square, where Schwerin's oldest half-timbered house leans out over the pavement. This is the medieval heart of the city, cosy, lopsided, and full of small surprises.

Sobre este lugar

Reached through a narrow passage off the Market Square, the Buschstraße and its neighbouring lanes preserve the intimate scale of old Schwerin. The city was founded in 1160 and its original web of streets still roughly follows the medieval plan, even though the great fire of 1651 swept away almost every wooden building. The houses that rose from the ashes are stately baroque gabled homes, but tucked among them survives the Kommodenhäuschen at Buschstraße 15, a tiny half-timbered cottage dated 1698 whose jettied upper floor juts out so far that walkers instinctively duck their heads. With its low doorways, uneven cobbles, and shop windows glowing at dusk, this quarter is the perfect place to slow down and feel the age of the town beneath your feet.
