Alcaicería

A warren of narrow lanes lined with colourful little shops, the restored remnant of the great Moorish silk market that was once the richest bazaar in Granada.

Sobre este lugar

The Alcaicería is a maze of narrow, shop-lined lanes beside the cathedral that recreates the atmosphere of the grand bazaar of Moorish Granada. In Nasrid times this was a vast and tightly guarded market, its gates locked at night, devoted above all to the lucrative trade in silk, for which Granada was renowned throughout the Mediterranean world. The very name comes from an Arabic word meaning the place of the Caesar, a reference to the royal privilege under which such markets operated. The original Alcaicería was far larger, but it was almost entirely destroyed by a fire in 1843. What survives today is a smaller, romantic reconstruction, its narrow passageways hung with lamps and crammed with shops selling ceramics, leather, lamps, spices, textiles and the famous inlaid woodwork called taracea, a living echo of the Moorish souk.
