Château d'Annecy

Perched on its hilltop, the Château d'Annecy has guarded the old town for some eight centuries, its great Queen's Tower rising above a cascade of slate rooftops. Once the fortress of the Counts of Geneva, it offers the finest first view over the town and its shimmering lake.

Sobre este lugar

The Château d'Annecy climbs the hill above the medieval town like a stone crown, and it has watched over the city for roughly eight hundred years. Its oldest section, the mighty Tour de la Reine, dates from the twelfth century and has walls more than four metres thick. This was the seat of the Counts of Geneva and later the Dukes of the Genevois-Nemours, a branch of the House of Savoy, who made Annecy a small princely capital. Ravaged by fire and abandoned in the seventeenth century, the castle spent three hundred years as an army barracks before the town bought it in 1953 and restored it. Today it houses a museum of Alpine art, medieval sculpture and regional heritage, and its ramparts command a breathtaking panorama over the rooftops, the canals and the Alpine peaks beyond.
