Rue Sainte-Claire

Annecy's arcaded high street runs through the heart of the old town, lined with pastel facades and long covered walkways of rounded stone arches. It leads to the medieval Porte Sainte-Claire and hides the house where a famous learned academy was born.

Sobre este lugar

Rue Sainte-Claire is the grand old high street of medieval Annecy, and for centuries it has been the town's main artery of trade. Both sides are lined with tall houses painted in warm shades of ochre, pink and yellow, their ground floors opening into long covered arcades of rounded stone arches that shelter shoppers from rain and snow. At number 18 stands the Maison Bagnorea, built in 1582, home of the jurist Antoine Favre, who in 1607 founded the Académie Florimontane here together with Francis de Sales, a learned society often seen as a forerunner of the Académie française. The street ends at the Porte Sainte-Claire, a fortified medieval gate crowned with a bell turret, through which the old road to Chambéry once passed.
