Eglise des Dominicains

A luminous Gothic friars' church whose slender columns and wooden ceiling frame Schongauer's glowing Madonna of the Rose Bower, one of the most tender paintings in France.

Sobre este lugar

The Eglise des Dominicains is a luminous Gothic preaching church begun by the Dominican friars in 1289 and completed in the mid fourteenth century. True to the mendicant ideal of poverty, it has no heavy vaulting, only slender columns, a light wooden ceiling, and tall windows that still hold fourteenth century stained glass. Its treasure is Martin Schongauer's Madonna of the Rose Bower, painted in 1473, in which the Virgin sits among red roses and finches before a shimmering gold ground. Created for the collegiate church of Saint Martin and later cut down from its original size, the panel was famously stolen in 1972, recovered, and given a new home in the Dominican church the following year.
