A gang burst into the hotel's jewellery boutique swinging hatchets and carrying handguns, smashed the display cases and swept up roughly 4.5 million euros in watches and jewels. But the escape went wrong. As some of them fled, staff and security sealed the hotel's doors, trapping several raiders inside, where they were overpowered and arrested. Most of the stolen pieces were recovered on the premises, and the suspects were charged with armed robbery by an organised group. For once, the story ended not with a clean getaway but with handcuffs in the lobby.
