À propos de ce lieu
Tucked into the arcades of Kramgasse, the Einstein House looks like any other sandstone townhouse in Bern's old town, yet its second floor holds one of the most consequential addresses in the history of science. Albert Einstein lived here from 1903 to 1905 with his wife Mileva Maric and their infant son Hans Albert, while working as a technical clerk at the Swiss Federal Patent Office a short walk away. In 1905, his so-called miracle year, he produced a series of papers from this cramped domestic setting that introduced the special theory of relativity, the equivalence of mass and energy, the light quantum, and proof of the existence of atoms. Today the Albert Einstein Society keeps the apartment furnished in the period style, with the family's rooms preserved on the second floor and an exhibition on his life and work above. A small cafe on the ground floor lets you linger where genius once climbed the stairs each evening.
