Kapellplatz

A lively cobbled square at the gateway to the Chapel Bridge, watched over by Lucerne's oldest church and crowned by the wildly colourful Fritschi Fountain. This is the beating heart of the city's famous carnival.

À propos de ce lieu

Kapellplatz has been a meeting point for Lucerne since the Middle Ages, a bright pocket of cafe tables and market stalls where the old town spills toward the Reuss. It takes its name from the Peterskapelle, Saint Peter's Chapel, the oldest church in the city, first documented in 1178 and rebuilt in graceful Baroque style over its medieval core in the 1740s. At the centre stands the flamboyant Fritschi Fountain of 1918, its column crowded with the carved masks of Brother Fritschi and his family, the legendary patrons of the Lucerne carnival. Peaceful for most of the year, the square erupts into colour every Fasnacht, when the Fritschi wagon circles the fountain to wake the city for its wildest celebration.
