Ayuntamiento de Bilbao

Bilbao's ornate city hall of 1892, a grand eclectic palace rising beside the river, hiding a dazzling Arab Hall inspired by the Alhambra behind its stately facade.

À propos de ce lieu

The City Hall of Bilbao, completed in 1892, is a grand monument to the city's industrial golden age, when Bilbao was one of the wealthiest and most dynamic cities in Spain. Designed in an eclectic style mixing Baroque and classical elements, it stands proudly on the bank of the river Nervión, its stately facade reflected in the water. The building replaced an earlier town hall that had stood on the site of a former convent. Its greatest surprise lies within: the sumptuous Salón Árabe, the Arab Hall, a ceremonial room richly decorated in the Moorish-revival style with intricate plasterwork and tiles inspired by the Alhambra of Granada, used for the city's most important civic occasions. Floodlit at night and often decorated for festivals, the Ayuntamiento is a proud symbol of the self-made, ambitious spirit of Bilbao.
