Gran Teatro Falla

A striking theatre of red brick and horseshoe arches in the neo-Mudéjar style, the beloved home of the famous Carnival of Cádiz and its witty, satirical singing competitions.

À propos de ce lieu

The Gran Teatro Falla is one of the most distinctive and best-loved buildings in Cádiz, instantly recognisable by its facade of warm red brick pierced with elegant horseshoe arches, in the neo-Mudéjar style that evokes the Moorish architecture of Spain. Built around the turn of the twentieth century and named after the Cádiz-born composer Manuel de Falla, it is a fine theatre in its own right. But to the people of Cádiz it means one thing above all: Carnival. For the Gran Teatro Falla is the heart and the official stage of the Carnival of Cádiz, the most famous in mainland Spain and one of the most celebrated in the world. Each year in the weeks before Lent, the theatre hosts the official competition of the Carnival groups, the chirigotas and comparsas, who perform witty, biting, satirical songs mocking politicians, celebrities and current events. It is a uniquely gaditano art form of sharp humour and clever wordplay.
