Puente Romano

An ancient bridge of sixteen arches spanning the Guadalquivir, first built by the Romans two thousand years ago and rebuilt by the Moors, offering the classic view up to the Mosque-Cathedral.

À propos de ce lieu

The Roman Bridge of Córdoba has carried traffic across the Guadalquivir river for some two thousand years. First built in the first century BC, in the time of the Emperor Augustus, as part of the great Roman road network, it has been repaired and rebuilt many times, most substantially by the Moors in the Middle Ages, so that little of the original Roman stone survives in its sixteen arches. For centuries it was the only bridge in Córdoba, the vital gateway into the city from the south. Halfway across stands a seventeenth-century statue of the Archangel Raphael, the city's protector, before which locals still pause. From the bridge, and especially from its southern end, you get the iconic view of old Córdoba rising above the river, crowned by the great bell tower and bulk of the Mosque-Cathedral. The bridge found new fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
