Plaça Major

Palma's elegant arcaded main square, a harmonious rectangle of ochre buildings lined with cafes and artisan market stalls, built on the site of the former headquarters of the Inquisition.

À propos de ce lieu

The Plaça Major is the grand, formal main square of Palma, a harmonious enclosed rectangle of uniform ochre-coloured buildings, their ground floors opening into a shady arcade lined with cafes and shops. Laid out in the early nineteenth century, the square has a darker history beneath its cheerful surface, for it was built on the site once occupied by the headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition in Mallorca, whose buildings were demolished to create the open space. Today it could hardly be more different in mood: it is a lively, sociable place, its centre often filled with the stalls of an artisan and craft market, and alive with street performers and musicians entertaining the crowds. Slightly raised above the surrounding streets, it is a popular meeting point and a pleasant place to pause for a coffee beneath the arcades.
