Casa-Museo de Antonio Machado

The humble boarding-house room where the beloved Spanish poet Antonio Machado lived for over a decade while teaching in Segovia, preserved simply as he left it.

À propos de ce lieu

Tucked into the quiet streets of the upper old town is a modest house that was, for over a decade, the home of one of the most beloved poets in the Spanish language, Antonio Machado. A leading figure of the literary Generation of 98, Machado came to Segovia in 1919 to work as a schoolteacher of French, and he lived here, in a simple room in a humble boarding house, until 1932. The house has been preserved as a museum, and its great power lies precisely in its humility: visitors see the plain, spare rooms, the simple furniture, the cold little bedroom and study, exactly as the poet knew them, a moving contrast to his towering literary stature. Here he wrote, received friends and intellectuals, and carried on a famous late-life love affair in verse. For lovers of Spanish literature, this unassuming house is a place of real pilgrimage.
