Plaza del Triunfo

A stately square ringed by three UNESCO World Heritage monuments, the cathedral, the Alcázar and the Archive of the Indies, with a baroque monument marking the city's survival of a great earthquake.

À propos de ce lieu

The Plaza del Triunfo, the Square of Triumph, is the ceremonial heart of monumental Seville, enclosed by three of the city's greatest buildings, all together forming a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Cathedral and Giralda, the royal palace of the Real Alcázar behind its red walls, and the Renaissance Archive of the Indies. The square takes its name from a baroque monument, the Triunfo, raised in gratitude after Seville survived the catastrophic Lisbon earthquake of 1755 with relatively little damage, which the faithful attributed to divine protection. A second monument honours the Immaculate Conception, a doctrine Seville championed with special fervour. Standing in the centre, you can turn in a slow circle and take in sacred, royal and imperial Spain all at once, an extraordinary concentration of history in a single open space.
