Alcázar de Toledo

The massive square fortress crowning the summit of the city, a stronghold since Roman times, rebuilt as a palace for Charles the Fifth and famous for its dramatic siege in the Spanish Civil War.

À propos de ce lieu

The Alcázar is the great fortress that crowns the highest point of Toledo, its four square towers visible for miles around and defining the city's skyline. A stronghold has stood on this commanding summit since Roman times, followed by a Moorish citadel and medieval castle, but the imposing building seen today was largely created in the sixteenth century, when the Emperor Charles the Fifth had it rebuilt as a grand Renaissance royal palace. In the twentieth century the Alcázar became notorious for the Siege of the Alcázar in 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, when a Nationalist garrison withstood a long and bloody siege by Republican forces, an episode turned into a potent propaganda legend by the eventual victors. Heavily damaged and rebuilt yet again, the fortress today houses the Army Museum and the regional library, and its terraces command sweeping views over the city and the Tagus.
