À propos de ce lieu
Standing on the Plaça de la Mare de Déu, just behind the cathedral, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken is the spiritual home of Valencia's most beloved figure, the Mare de Déu dels Desemparats, patroness of the city and region. Built in the seventeenth century, the basilica is linked to the cathedral by an arched passage and is famous for its oval interior crowned by a magnificent dome, frescoed by the painter Antonio Palomino with a swirling vision of heaven. Behind the high altar stands the venerated image of the Virgin, a figure so central to Valencian identity that the festival in her honour, and the heart-stopping offering of flowers to her during the Fallas, when her towering wooden frame is clothed entirely in blossoms, are among the most moving events of the city's year.
