Fuente de la Hispanidad

A striking modern fountain at the end of the Plaza del Pilar, whose cascading water is shaped to form a giant relief map of Latin America, celebrating the shared heritage of the Spanish-speaking world.

À propos de ce lieu

At the western end of the great Plaza del Pilar stands one of Zaragoza's most original monuments, the Fuente de la Hispanidad, the Fountain of Hispanic Heritage. Created in 1991 as part of a major redesign of the square, it takes the form of a large sloping surface over which water cascades, and the key lies in its shape: the pool and the stepped waterfall trace the outline of Central and South America, a vast water map of the lands with which Zaragoza and Spain share a language and a history. The connection is especially fitting here, for the Virgin of the Pillar is the patroness of the Hispanic world, and her feast day on the twelfth of October coincides with the anniversary of Columbus's landing, celebrated across the Spanish-speaking world as the Day of Hispanidad.
