Su questo luogo
Just north of the Golden Roof, the Cathedral of St. James rises behind a pair of green copper domes that have become part of the old town's skyline. Built between 1717 and 1724 on the foundations of a much older Romanesque church, it was designed by Johann Jakob Herkomer, who died only months after the first stone was laid, leaving his nephew Johann Georg Fischer to finish the work. The plain pale facade gives nothing away. Step inside and the ceiling seems to dissolve into open sky, painted by the Bavarian master Cosmas Damian Asam with scenes from the life of Saint James, while his brother Egid Quirin wreathed the whole interior in glittering white and gold stucco. Above the high altar hangs the cathedral's quiet treasure: a small, deeply tender image of the Virgin and Child by Lucas Cranach the Elder, painted around 1530 and venerated here since 1650.
