The City Tower (Stadtturm)

A 51 metre medieval watchtower crowned by a green Renaissance onion dome, with a panoramic platform that gazes straight up at the Nordkette peaks.

Su questo luogo

Just a few steps from the Golden Roof, the Stadtturm rises out of the rooftops of the old town like a stone sentinel. Built between 1442 and 1450 as the tower of the medieval town hall, it served the burghers of Innsbruck as a watchtower and an alarm post, with guards stationed at the top from 1529 to scan the valley for fire and approaching danger. Its first two floors were once the city prison, dank cells set directly beneath the rooms where the town council met. Around 1560 the original pointed Gothic spire was replaced with the bulbous Renaissance onion dome you see today, and in 1603 a mechanical clock was added that still keeps time. Today visitors can climb the spiral stairway, 133 steps in all, to a viewing gallery roughly 31 metres up, where the red rooftops, the baroque church spires, and the turquoise Inn all spread out beneath the towering wall of the Nordkette.
